Women in Food series: Rebecca Marshman, Head Pastry Chef, The All England Lawn Tennis Club
Rebecca started working at Compass Group UK & Ireland at the beginning of 2017 as head pastry chef at The All England Lawn Tennis Club. Working alongside a number of high-profile chefs, Rebecca enjoyed catering for her first Championships this summer and created a number of delicious fine-dining desserts for guests.
Rebecca started her career at the age of 16 where she worked as an apprentice chef in London, while completing her apprenticeship training at Westminster Kingsway College. Since then, Rebecca has had the opportunity to work across a number of iconic restaurants and hotels in London where she has worked alongside some famous chefs creating fine-dining desserts for a wide-ranging audience before joining as head pastry chef for Levy Restaurants UK, part of Compass Group UK & Ireland, at The All England Lawn Tennis Club.
During her eight-year career Rebecca has had the opportunity to take part in Chef Race, a TV cooking competition. Cooking her way across the USA, she describes it as one of the highlights of her career. She competed in eight out of 10 episodes taking her all the way to the semi-final. However, her proudest moment so far was winning the prestigious Apprentice of the Year award at The Craft Guild of Chefs when she was 17 years old.
On Women in Food:
“I think the Women in Food programme launched by Compass Group UK & Ireland is absolutely brilliant. I think the best way to get more female chefs into the industry is to have more women as role models who can then mentor and encourage younger people and show them what a great career being a chef can be. It certainly can be challenging but the work comes with great rewards. It’s a fun and exciting career with endless chances to show creativity and passion and this is exactly what we need to get across to young female chefs.”
On Compass Group UK & Ireland:
“I have really enjoyed my time at Compass Group UK & Ireland so far and it was amazing being able to work at my first Championships. I’m always striving to do more to further advance my career and am looking forward to developing my role within the company.”
