Tom Finn (Apprenticeship & Early Careers Administrator) – Kickstarter Case Study

Case Study

Tom Finn, Apprenticeship & Early Careers Administrator with Compass Group UK & Ireland, was not sure what to expect when joining the business. Having previously not enjoyed working in an office environment, his expectations were quickly exceeded after starting on the Government’s Kickstart scheme in the Compass Apprenticeship department.

Tom was welcomed into the team immediately; he received support from the entire team, in particular from his manager, Chloe. This support allowed Tom to make a real impression during his Kickstart placement and was offered a full-time role in the team. Tom has also embarked on his career journey at Compass and enrolled on a Level 3 Business Admin Apprenticeship.

Initially, Tom had not thought about apprenticeships, but when offered a full-time opportunity at Compass, he jumped at the chance to advance his career! Tom said “I wanted to start an apprenticeship as for the first time in my working life, I could see myself staying somewhere for many years. I am more than happy to invest my time into a company that wants me to do better.”

Tom’s new role involves processing Kickstart and apprenticeship opportunities for candidates and advising them on the application process; “I really enjoy (this) because I’m helping people who were in my position hopefully to be as happy as I am in my role. It also makes me feel even more part of the team.”

Over time, Tom’s aspirations have changed as more opportunities have presented themselves, however project management has always been in the back of his mind as a potential career goal. Compass Career Pathways allows Tom to see what this career could look like; “To be able to explore different career pathways within the business really excites me, as there’s so much opportunity.”

Tom believes the best part of his new role is helping people into work, and that he can really see his currently position advancing his career forward.

“It’s a breath of fresh air to have people thank me for helping them. As well as this, the best bit about my job is its prospects. I finally have a plan for my career, and I am so excited to see what the future holds.”
